Returning to St James’s with this incredible Tango Trio. Programme: Vivaldi and Piazzolla’s Four Seasons. Look forward to seeing you all there! This programme is years in the making. It wasn’t until the endlessly curious concert violinist Alda Dizdari featured in a rather unique dramatic production that paired the Four Seasons by Vivaldi with The Sorrows of Young Werther by Goethe that Vivaldi’s score really made an impression on Alda and inspired her to delve deep into the musical eccentricities and the dramatic power of these concertos that feel as refreshing and relevant as the day they were written back in the 17th Century. She will be the soloist and lead the Mellos Ensemble, a chamber ensemble she founded in 2021 out of a love for exploring chamber music in all forms, from small to large scale and wide range of genres and periods from baroque to contemporary. The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires by the king of tango, Astor Piazzolla offer an explosion of Latin American rhythms within a classical structure. It is thanks to a very fruitful collaboration with two extraordinary musicians, the Cuban born pianist/flautist, Jose Zalba Smith www.josezalba.com with his rich classical, jazz and popular music background and the Albanian cellist Idlir Shyti www.idlirshyti.com that has enabled the trio to explore the two worlds colliding, the rich tapestry of tango rhythms and the different moods evoked whilst paying tribute to the great European classical music tradition that inspired the work.

Sci-Fi Bulletin called the London premiere of the show in 2017 “… a three-in-one précis of some great music”. Tradicional Cubano is a combination of flute, double bass, guitar (Cuban tres) and percussion, which brings together the most vibrant and iconic musical sounds from vintage Cuba. Its founder, Jose Zalba-Smith, son of Javier Zalba (former member of Irakere, Cubanismo and the Buena Vista Social Club Orchestra), is strongly committed to continue his father's legacy. Javier Zalba has strong links to the band and performs with them in both Cuba and the UK. On this occasion they are both performing live here at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire. The group takes inspiration from composers such as Miguel Matamoros, Eduardo Sanchez de Fuentes, Sindo Garay, Benny More and many more. They have performed in a wide range of venues across the UK including The Pumphouse, Aldeburgh Suffolk, The National Theatre, The Forge, The Cuban Moorgate, The Savoy, The Langham, St James’s Church Piccadilly, St Peter’s Notting Hill, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama Cardiff, Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester and The Duke of Cumberland in Whitstable, to name but a few. Jose and the band are much in demand and as well as their performing, they also currently run highly successful educational music projects at colleges such as the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Royal Northern College of Music, Oxford Flute Summer School, Philippa Davies International Flute Summer School, The Scottish International Flute Summer School and here at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire.

Featuring Visual Vernacular (VV)* and creative captioning, the audience will be taken on a musical journey and meet Para-equestrian Laurentia Tan whose 2021 Paralympic Games dressage routine with her horse Sherlock, provided inspiration for the performance.
